Reef restoration

Reef restoration

Through this project, we restore existing coral and build entirely new reefs.

Coral reefs are the nurseries of the oceans — incredibly important, yet incredibly fragile. Fishing, pollution, careless tourism, and global warming have caused widespread damage to coral reefs around the world. Now it's crucial to protect and restore as many reefs as possible, and where possible, to create entirely new ones.

We do this by placing sand-coated structures in the water, onto which we attach coral fragments. These fragments are given time to strengthen and grow significantly, eventually forming full coral reefs over the course of a few years. In this way, we are building new nurseries of the ocean — which are desperately needed, as illegal fishing, pollution, and warming waters continue to damage reefs in many parts of the world. Of course, we must stop this destruction and ensure reefs get the protection they deserve. But in the meantime, we must also begin rebuilding in places where reefs are already protected.

For 10 euros, we can plant 5 coral fragments — and we do this in various ways, across multiple locations.

Sumberkima, Indonesia

Located in the northwest of Bali, far from the busy tourist hotspots, lies Sumberkima — a stunning bay where, unfortunately, the underwater world has suffered significant damage over the past decades. Fortunately, the tide has turned! The original reef is being restored, and at two suitable and protected locations, new reefs are being built.

At this site, our approach is a bit more creative than at other locations. We focus mainly on large globes, which, surrounded by other artistic coral structures, can grow into small coral forests. Beyond their visual beauty, you can probably imagine how the insides of these fully grown globes become safe havens for the little Nemos swimming around inside.

The local community has now shifted its focus from fishing to sustainable tourism. This means they benefit from a large, sustainable and healthy reef, allowing us to build not only legal protections but also strong local support. A thriving coral reef is not only good for nature — it’s also becoming a vital asset for the people of Sumberkima.

5 fragments for 10 euros! Are you in?

Padang Bai, Indonesia

Located on the east coast of Bali, safely away from the harbor and at a depth protected from major temperature fluctuations, lies our very own TRC reef — nearly 200 square meters in size, where we plan to plant over 6,000 coral fragments. We’re doing this using reef stars — sand-coated steel frames. This location holds protected status, and a floating pontoon is even being constructed to ensure 24/7 security for the reef.

And we’re not stopping at 6,000 coral fragments — we aim to make this not just the largest restoration effort in Bali, but in all of Southeast Asia!

Just 10 euros are needed to plant 5 coral fragments. In this project, we evaluate progress every quarter and assess what’s needed and feasible at each site. Naturally, we’ll keep you updated through our website, newsletter, and social media channels.

I’m in — let’s go!

* The cost for us to finance a single coral fragment depends on the total number of fragments we can deploy each quarter, the location, exchange rates, and many other small and large factors. Two euros is a relatively safe estimate for us, which also includes a 10% fee for TRC — this helps keep the Club operational. If there is money left over at the end of the year, we will communicate this and plant additional coral fragments. That’s only fair — and fun!
