Soil restoration

Soil restoration

Healthy soils are the foundation of a thriving ecosystem and are essential for the wellbeing of our planet. Soil restoration is therefore a vital part of sustainable nature management and climate adaptation and mitigation. By improving soil quality, we not only restore land fertility but also enhance biodiversity, improve water retention, and reduce negative emissions.

In this project, we restore lost or depleted soil in two main ways. First, we replant native plants, shrubs, and trees to rebuild natural vegetation and ecosystems. Secondly, we convert organic waste into compost, which we use to literally nourish and restore the soil. This process accelerates recovery and prevents organic waste from ending up in landfills, contributing to a circular and sustainable approach. Starting from just 2 euros per square meter, we’re working together for a healthier planet!

Currently, we are operational in the following locations:

The Araguaia Corridor, Brazil

On this location, managed by boots on the ground Black Jaguar Foundation, it’s all about restoring the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor in order to reconnect the Amazon Rainforest with the Cerrado Savanna. This lifeline stretches 2,600 km in length and 40 km in width, covering a stunning 10.4 million hectares. We’re moving in the right direction — meter by meter. Want to join in? You can do so starting from just one square meter for 2 euros.
But let’s be honest: 10 square meters for 20 euros already sounds a lot better.
Or how about 100 square meters for 200 euros?

Restoring the corridor is a tangible way to fight the destruction of two of Brazil’s most precious ecosystems: the Amazon Rainforest and the Cerrado Savanna.
Currently, up to 73 native species are being used to help bring the ecosystem back to life. These species are always planted in a mixed variety to mimic the original shape and resilience of the natural landscape. Through biannual maintenance of the restoration sites, we ensure that the newly planted areas aren’t overtaken by invasive species and that the ecosystem returns in a truly balanced and future-proof way.

Guarantee?

The Brazilian Constitution requires landowners to preserve at least 20% of their land in its natural state (depending on the region). Where that’s not the case within the corridor zone, this 20% is being restored. This is enforced not just by law, but also through binding contracts between farmers and the project organization — with 20 years of monitoring, maintenance, and restoration guaranteed.

Price Breakdown

So how do we get to €2 per square meter?
A project of this scale requires people — for growing seedlings, for transport, for land preparation, for working closely with farmers, and most importantly: for long-term monitoring of all the trees planted, now and in the future. Planting is only the first step on a long road to a fully restored corridor.

That means labor, machinery, production, materials, and logistics are all essential. In addition, there are operational costs for The Restoration Club. We’ll know the exact numbers at the end of the year, but you have our guarantee: 90% of your donation goes directly to the Corridor Project. The remaining 10% supports our operational work. And if there’s anything left over at the end of the year, it will go straight back into the corridor — of course!

Kuku, Kenia

Currently, we are monitoring the progress of what we have funded over the past few years: the digging of bunds in drought-affected areas of Kenya (in partnership with Just Diggit). These bunds capture rainwater that would otherwise run off across the dry, barren plains. Instead, the rainwater is now retained within the bund, allowing it to seep into the ground.

As a result, seeds that have long lain dormant in the soil begin to sprout again, bringing vegetation back in and around the bunds. By digging bunds, dry areas can quickly become green and fertile once more — a single bund can revitalise up to 124 square metres of land.

The bunds are being dug in Kuku, Kenya, home to the Maasai. This community relies on the land as a source of food and income. In the past, the local Maasai population were nomadic, moving from one area to another. Nowadays, they tend to remain in one place, which has led to overgrazing. Combined with the rapidly changing climate, several areas in their immediate surroundings have become degraded and are now difficult to inhabit.

This not only affects the Maasai themselves but also the many wild animals that live in the region. By digging bunds, the Maasai are restoring greenery to the land. And that's not all — the project also creates employment opportunities and provides additional income.

The bunds are dug during the dry season, so they are ready to capture rainwater before the rainy season begins — and that’s when the regreening process starts. Thanks to your support, over 2,000 bunds have already been dug. Keep an eye on our channels for updates on the progress at this location.

Sumerkima Hill, Indonesia

At this location, we already have a nursery in operation supporting the planting of trees. At the same site, we convert organic waste into compost, which we use to literally nourish and restore the soil. This process accelerates recovery and prevents organic waste from ending up in landfill, contributing to a circular and sustainable approach.

The compost is used to restore the soil and to help seedlings grow once planted. And of course, let’s not forget: at the same time, hundreds of kilograms of organic waste are being diverted from landfill.

*The cost for us to finance soil restoration depends on the total number of metres we can restore and/or kilograms of waste we can compost. Beyond the actual amount, there are other factors worth considering — such as the location, exchange rates, and ever-changing circumstances we need to deal with.

Two euros is a relatively safe estimate for us, which also includes a 10% fee for TRC — this helps keep the Club operational. If there is money left over at the end of the year, we will communicate this and restore additional soil accordingly. That’s only fair — and fun!
